Wyoming Unit 68 is where the volcanic Absaroka Range collides with the granite peaks of the northern Wind River Range above Dubois, and for elk that convergence is everything: from a valley floor near 6,900 feet the ground climbs 4,000 to 5,000 feet into alpine basins, pulling bulls high to forage early, then filtering them down onto mid-mountain benches between 8,000 and 9,500 feet as frost cures the high country and snow nudges them toward sage benches near the river.
