Wyoming Hunt Area 56 is a unit of brutal vertical contrast, climbing from sage basin floor near 4,200 feet around Worland up past 10,000 feet along the spine of the southern Bighorns, and elk read that gradient daily. Water tells the story: high-country creeks like Tensleep and Paintrock run reliably while foothill stock tanks go dry by mid-August, concentrating animals on mountain mahogany and bitterbrush browse. Late snow shoves them down to the south-facing limestone breaks.
