Unit 117 plays more like the Black Hills than the Wyoming high plains: ponderosa-clad limestone ridges and oak-choked draws spilling into mixed-grass prairie, with elk working the productive 4,500 to 6,000 ft band beneath Warren Peak in the Bear Lodge Mountains. Water tells the story here, since the Belle Fourche River and creeks like Sand and Beaver run mostly through private bottoms, concentrating elk on the scattered seeps, tanks, and reservoirs of the public Bear Lodge ground. Checkerboarded ownership and bentonite gumbo roads make every approach a planning problem.
