Wyoming's Unit 116 breaks the wide-open-plains stereotype: tucked into the far northeastern corner in Crook County, it's a Black Hills island of ponderosa ridges and limestone-rimmed canyons rising from mixed-grass prairie, climbing from about 3,500 feet along the Belle Fourche to roughly 6,600 feet at Warren Peak on the Bear Lodge crest.
