Wyoming Unit 61 deer hunters live on a hard transition: the eastern flank of the Bighorn Mountains drops from a 10,500 ft alpine crest through timbered slopes and Madison limestone breaks down to 4,800 ft shortgrass prairie east of Buffalo, with a checkerboard of National Forest, BLM, State Trust, and private ground laced between. We map the mid-mountain benches near 7,000 to 8,500 ft where deer test routes between summer and winter range, the mountain mahogany and bitterbrush browse, and the scarce foothill water that concentrates movement.
