GMU 638, West Klickitat, is a true transition unit where Cascade timber gives way to oak savanna and then breaks abruptly into rimrocked basalt canyons cut by the Klickitat River, the kind of country where elk hunters who glass opposite canyon faces beat those who grind out miles. Elevations run from about 500 feet along the lower river corridor to roughly 5,800 feet in the Simcoe Mountains, with bitterbrush and Oregon white oak mast driving the mid-elevation browse belt and animals concentrating on perennial water and unmapped springs as fall dries the country out.
