GMU 612 (Goodman) flips everything a dry-country elk hunter expects: this is temperate coastal rainforest on the west Olympic edge, where water is never the problem and total canopy, salmonberry, and devil's club are. Valley floors sit near 100 to 400 feet along the Hoh, Bogachiel, and Calawah drainages, while foothill ridges climb only into the 1,800 to 2,800 foot band against the Olympic National Park line, an off-limits refuge elk filter in and out of. The engine is the cutblock regrowth, fireweed and fresh browse that concentrate animals off the food-poor old growth.
