GMU 602, the Dayton Unit, throws elk hunters into Washington's Blue Mountains, where basalt-and-loess canyons cut by the Tucannon River rise straight out of the Palouse wheat fields to ridges above 6,000 feet. This is a moving-water unit: elk key on the perennial Tucannon and tributaries like Cummings, Panjab, and Sheep creeks, plus huckleberry and ceanothus that pull them high in late summer, while private timber and ag ground funnel access onto a few public corridors.
