Unit 522, the Loo-wit Unit, is built around the volcanic footprint of Mount St. Helens, a tiered landscape where barren pumice plains and blast-zone scablands give way to dense second-growth timber and steep, glacially carved drainages, terrain that pushes elk between cover and forage in ways generic maps never show. The floor sits near 1,000 feet along the Toutle and Green River drainages and climbs to 8,365 feet at the summit, with elk shifting to mid-mountain benches between 2,500 and 4,500 feet as Pacific fronts arrive, then dropping to lower wintering slopes under snow. Huckleberry, fireweed, and recovering hardwood browse drive the activity.
