GMU 516 (Packwood) is a punishing west-slope Cascade elk unit where the Cowlitz River floor near 900 feet climbs past 7,000 feet to the Goat Rocks crest, so elk ride the vertical, holding in subalpine huckleberry parklands early before the first storms push them down to mid-elevation timber benches between 3,000 and 5,000 feet. With perennial creeks in nearly every fold and Gifford Pinchot access funneled through US-12 and a few forest arteries, knowing the country matters.
