GMU 522, the Loo-wit Unit, is hunted in the shadow of Mount St. Helens, where blast-zone pumice plains, scoured river valleys, and recovering second-growth timber stack into a landscape unlike anything else in the Cascades. Deer hunters here work an elevation range from roughly 1,000 ft along the Toutle and Green River drainages up through timbered mid-mountain benches between 2,500 and 4,500 ft, where Pacific fronts push animals as the season turns. Huckleberry, fireweed, and recovering hardwood browse drive the activity.
