GMU 249, the "Mashel," is a low-elevation timber unit tucked into the southwestern foothills of Mount Rainier, where deer hunters trade glassing for patience in dense, fog-bound second-growth that rewards anyone willing to leave the truck. Floors near 600 feet in the Mashel and Nisqually river bottoms climb toward 5,000-foot ridgelines, and the recovering clearcut edges flushing with fireweed, salmonberry, and vine maple are the real feeding zones. Water is everywhere, so movement follows cover and open gates instead.
