Washington's Entiat Unit 247 is a knife-ridge and canyon world, a west-to-east drainage off the Cascade crest where parallel finger ridges plunge from roughly 8,200 feet near Mount Maude down to 700 feet at the Columbia, with relief of 4,000 to 5,000 vertical feet over short distances. Deer key on perennial water like the Entiat River, Mad River, and Tillicum Creek and on the mid-mountain regen burns (ceanothus, serviceberry, aspen) between 4,500 and 6,500 feet, since the benches run bone-dry by August.
