Washington's GMU 121, the Huckleberry Unit, is close-cover bear country, not glassing country: a north-south spine of moderate, heavily timbered ridges in Stevens County, dropping from roughly 5,800 feet on Huckleberry Mountain to about 1,300 feet along Lake Roosevelt, with most hunting in the 2,500 to 4,500 foot band. We map the clearcut regrowth blocks and huckleberry, serviceberry, and ninebark browse that pull bears, the perennial creeks like Hunters and Cottonwood, and the patchwork private timber access that traps the unprepared.
