The Wasatch West throws elk hunters straight up a fault-block escarpment that climbs from 4,500 ft valley benches to summits above 11,750 ft, often stacking 5,000 to 6,500 ft of vertical relief into just three to five horizontal miles. Elk shift with the calendar: high into north-facing cirques during the August heat, down to brushy mid-mountain benches between 7,000 and 9,000 ft once frosts hit, then onto low foothill winter range near the valleys. Water sits in canyon bottoms (American Fork, Provo, Cottonwood), and bitterbrush, serviceberry, and aspen suckers drive the forage.
