The Plateau elk unit is a tale of two worlds: a high, aspen-rimmed tableland that pushes past 11,300 feet, then drops abruptly off the rim into glacier-scoured canyons falling 2,000 to 3,000 feet into desert benches near 6,200 feet. We map where elk shift through that gradient, from the willow-bottomed spruce parks up top to the mid-mountain aspen-and-conifer benches between 8,500 and 9,500 feet, plus the Skyline Drive water and bitterbrush forage that hold them.
