The North Slope of the Uintas is the only major east-west range in the lower 48, a serrated alpine spine falling from above 13,500 feet at Kings Peak down through conifer benches into sage and aspen foothills along the Wyoming line. Elk hunters work that gradient: high alpine basins early, then the 9,000 to 10,500 foot timbered benches as October frosts push animals down toward low wintering ground. Water is everywhere here, so animals are not water-constrained the way they are in desert units.
