Few western deer units swing from valley floor to alpine as violently as the Wasatch and Central Mountains, where classic drainages gain 3,000 to 4,000 vertical feet in under three trail miles, climbing from 5,000-foot sagebrush flats to ceilings above 11,500 feet.
