Utah Deer Unit San Juan, Montezuma Canyon

Montezuma Canyon is a long, branching red-rock drainage that carves south from the Abajo (Blue) Mountains foothills toward the San Juan River, so deer hunters work a system that drops from roughly 7,200 feet of Gambel oak and ponderosa down to 4,800 feet at the canyon mouth. In this dry, cell-dead country, animals stay tied to pinyon-juniper mesas, scattered guzzlers, and north-facing seeps, and bentonite clay roads can strand a truck after one monsoon cell.
