Pennsylvania's WMU 4D is classic Ridge-and-Valley bear country: long, parallel Appalachian spines like Shade, Jacks, and Mahantango Mountains rising from 450 to 600 foot valley floors up to 2,300 foot ridgetops, with steep, laurel-choked, shale-slick side-slopes that reward hunters who can read mast and movement. Bears key on hard mast here, chestnut and red oak acorns that hold game tight on the ridges in good years and push them toward the corn and soybean valleys when crops bust, while water runs in valley creeks (Penns, Middle, Mahantango) and stays scarce up high.
