Oregon Bear Unit Alsea

Alsea is defined by dense Central Coast Range rainforest where visibility is measured in yards, not miles, so bear hunters here play a permit-and-timber-access game as much as a terrain one: an industrial mosaic of Douglas-fir stands, clearcuts, and reprod plantations under a wet green canopy. Most productive country falls between 800 and 2,800 feet below Marys Peak (the range's high point at roughly 4,097 feet), where bears live on the seam between three-to-eight-year-old cutover browse (salmonberry, salal, trailing blackberry) and timbered security, water never limiting across the Alsea, Five Rivers, and Drift Creek headwaters.
