Unit 6A is the beating heart of the Jemez Mountains, where elk live on the grassy rim and meadow parks of the ancient Valles Caldera before slipping into steep, timbered domes and deep canyon breaks. Elevations run from roughly 6,400 ft in the lower drainages to above 11,200 ft on the high volcanic domes, with perennial forks of the Jemez and Guadalupe systems, mid-belt seeps, and Gambel oak acorn mast shaping where animals hold.
