Unit 5A is volcanic high country built around the Jemez Mountains and the rim surrounding the Valles Caldera, where gentle mesa tops break into steep escarpments and abrupt 1,500-foot canyon drops toward the Rio Grande, terrain that shapes how elk move and where pressure thins out. Operational elevations run from roughly 6,800 feet in pinyon-juniper benches to about 11,250 feet, with ponderosa parklands, Gambel oak mast, and high grassy valles in between, and elk stay water-tethered to perennial creeks and hidden springs through the dry early season.
