New Mexico Elk Unit 57

Sightings, hotspots, and hunt insights for New Mexico Game Management Unit 57.

New Mexico Unit 57 is Raton-Clayton volcanic country, extinct cinder cones and basalt-capped mesas rising out of open shortgrass prairie, and elk here relate to that vertical structure. The green mesa tops flip counterintuitively lush: Johnson Mesa rides above 8,000 feet in well-watered mountain meadow, a feeding magnet floating over prairie that runs from roughly 5,800 feet, drained by the Dry Cimarron. Because natural water is scarce, elk lean on stock tanks, windmill troughs, and basalt seeps, while heavy private ranch ownership and scattered State Trust and Kiowa National Grassland tracts dictate access. Our pack breaks it down: Unit Overview and Topography, Vegetation and Hydrology, Seasonal Expectations, Logistics and Access, plus a one-page Essential Recon summary. Study the unit on our interactive map, then export the points you choose to onX or your favorite hunting map.

How this data was collected

Data Hunt Guide aggregates publicly available sighting reports from across the web (social media, hunting forums, harvest reports, and trail-camera shares) and uses a proprietary algorithm to identify high-activity zones (hotspots) within each unit. Our team verifies coordinates manually before publication.
