Unit 56 is where the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains collide with high shortgrass prairie, a layered country of granite peaks, lava-capped mesas, and eroded cinder cones that rewards elk hunters who read terrain. Elevations climb from 6,400 ft on the eastern prairie to above 12,000 ft in the Cimarron and Costilla ranges, with perennial snowmelt in the Cimarron and Rio Costilla drainages and Gambel oak mast feeding the mid-elevation benches.
