Unit 51B rides the eastern flank of the southern Sangre de Cristos, where timbered Pecos high country stair-steps down through oak-choked canyons into juniper benches and red-rock arroyos, a transition that dictates where elk move. Floors near 7,000 feet climb to roughly 11,000 along the wilderness divide, and water rules everything: perennial creeks in the Mora and Sapello drainages shrink by late summer, pushing animals onto seeps, tanks, and Gambel oak mast in the mid-elevations.
