Unit 51A is really two hunts in one, where the timbered eastern flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains collides with rolling short-grass prairie, climbing from roughly 6,200 ft on the plains to above 10,500 ft along the western spine. This is predominantly private land of old Spanish grants and big ranches, so water rules everything: the dry eastern two-thirds leans on windmills and stock tanks, while Gambel oak mast and perennial snowmelt creeks pull elk in the high country.
