Unit 42 is northeastern New Mexico's "flat-and-falling" country, where elk hunters work broad shortgrass mesa tops that end without warning in 600 to 900 foot basalt and sandstone canyon drops feeding the Canadian River. Elevations run from about 4,200 feet along the river breaks to roughly 7,200 feet on the western rims, where ponderosa, Gambel oak, and piñon-juniper give way to gramma grass parks, and water is the controlling variable: perennial flow hugs the Canadian corridor while hidden seeps surface along basalt-capped mesa contacts. Ownership skews heavily private, so legal access is its own puzzle.
