New Mexico Unit 4 is mesa-and-canyon elk country in the southern San Juan Basin, where flat-topped mesas cut by deep, cottonwood-lined arroyos climb from roughly 6,400 feet along the Rio Chama corridor into ponderosa and mixed conifer near 10,500 feet in the Tusas high country. Elk hang on the pinyon-juniper benches and gambel oak (that acorn mast is a real fall driver), while water dictates everything: perennial Chama tributaries, weather-dependent stock tanks, and the canyon-head seeps that outlast the maps.
