In Unit 38, the southern Black Range collides with the upper Chihuahuan Desert, so elk hunters work a landscape that climbs from 5,200-foot grassland flats to a conifer spine above 10,000 feet in just a few drainages. Water is the limiting factor here: perennial flow hides in a few named drainages on the west and north flanks, while earthen tanks and high north-facing seeps hold animals through the dry early season.
