New Mexico Unit 37 is built around the collapsed volcanic caldera of the Jemez Mountains, where broad grassy valles ring out into timbered domes and radial canyons that climb from 6,500 feet to above 11,200 feet, and elk shift with the season from high mixed-conifer and aspen burn scars toward south-facing benches in the 7,500 to 8,500 foot band. We map the perennial water (East Fork Jemez, San Antonio, Rio Cebolla), the Gambel oak mast bands, and the unforgiving public, tribal, and preserve boundary mosaic.
