Unit 34 in southwestern New Mexico is a layered mountain-to-desert transect, anchored by the southern Black Range climbing to 10,011 feet at Hillsboro Peak and bleeding down into Chihuahuan desert grasslands near 4,200 feet, so elk hunters work roughly 5,500 feet of vertical relief. Perennial water is scarce outside the upper Mimbres and Las Animas drainages, making stock tanks, hidden seeps, and Gambel oak acorn mast decisive for finding animals.
