New Mexico Unit 23 is high-country mosaic where the southern Colorado Plateau yields to volcanic Mogollon Rim uplifts, a big-sky elk unit of timbered mesas, juniper savannas, and isolated cinder cones rather than punishing alpine relief. Elevations run from roughly 6,800 ft in the grama grasslands to 9,200 ft in ponderosa and Douglas fir, and because this is a water-scarce unit, elk orbit man-made dirt tanks, windmill troughs, and hidden rim seeps across Gila and Cibola National Forest ground.
