Unit 16E is a true sky island, the San Mateo Mountains vaulting from 5,000-foot desert basins to 10,000-foot peaks like West Blue Mountain (10,331 ft) in a single narrow footprint, so elk hold in the folds of timbered volcanic canyons and roadless wilderness cores. Water is the whole game here: few perennial streams, so animals key on dirt tanks, guzzlers, and shaded seeps, feeding the transition edges where grama grass parks meet Gambel oak and mountain mahogany.
