Unit 16E is a west-to-east transition where the conifer-cloaked Black Range crest tops 9,000 feet, then breaks downhill through piñon-juniper mesas into Chihuahuan desert grassland basins near 5,200 feet, country that pulls elk according to season and water. Hydrology here is tank-dependent and seasonally fragile, with perennial flow limited to short reaches of the Mimbres River and a few Black Range creeks, while Gambel oak and mountain mahogany carry mid-elevation browse.
