Unit 16D is canyon-cut volcanic country on the southern flank of the Gila, where elk hold tight to timbered north-facing benches and the few seep-fed drainages that stay wet after the tanks go dry. Elevations run from roughly 4,800 ft river bottoms to 9,000 ft ponderosa parks, with mid-mountain transition benches around 6,500 to 7,800 ft pulling animals after monsoon green-up, and gambel oak and mountain mahogany browse feeding them across bands.
