Unit 10 is high-desert elk country where the broad pinyon-juniper mesas of Cibola County rise into the timbered ponderosa spine of the Zuni Mountains, climbing from roughly 6,500 feet on the southern rim to about 9,250 feet along the crest. This is a dry unit by default, so elk stay water-locked early around scattered stock tanks and hidden north-slope seeps, then shift to oak-brush benches and mast once the first frosts hit.
