Unit 58 deer hunters are really hunting a vertical gradient, from the glaciated alpine cirques of the southern Sangre de Cristo and Truchas Peak country above 13,000 feet down through spruce-fir and Gambel oak benches into piñon-juniper foothills and historic Spanish land-grant grasslands. The upper Pecos River, Rio Mora, and Holy Ghost Creek run perennially, so early-season deer concentrate near water and shaded north slopes before sliding onto the 9,000 to 10,500 foot benches as frosts arrive.
