Unit 53 is true sky-island country, isolated forested ridgelines of the Bear, Gallinas, and Datil ranges punching up out of vast pinyon-juniper grasslands west of Socorro, where deer hunters work elevation bands from 6,200-foot basins to nearly 9,800 feet of mixed conifer. It is a water-driven unit: perennial flow is rare, so deer key on earthen tanks, windmill troughs, and north-facing seeps, and oak brush mast reshuffles them when acorns hit.
