Unit 51A is really two hunts in one, where the eastern flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains collides with northeastern New Mexico's short-grass prairie, so deer hunters work everything from 6,200-foot mesa-and-arroyo grassland up past 10,500-foot timbered rim country. On the dry eastern two-thirds, movement hinges on windmills and stock tanks, while Gambel oak mast and mid-elevation oak draws pull animals after the first hard frost, all on a checkerboarded private-and-public layout.
