New Mexico Unit 45 is a three-stage descent that deer hunters rarely find in one tag: alpine conifer ridges above 10,500 feet on the western Sangre de Cristo flank, steep canyon-and-mesa breaks in the middle, then rolling shortgrass plains near 6,200 feet fanning east toward I-25. Water rules everything here, from perennial Pecos and Mora headwater creeks to scattered ranch tanks, while Gambel oak, mountain mahogany, and cliffrose feed the mid-elevations.
