New Mexico's Unit 36 is the southern arm of the Sacramento Mountains, where sharp west-facing limestone escarpments rise out of the Tularosa Basin and ramp from a 4,500-foot desert floor past 9,500 feet of mixed conifer near Sunspot, so deer hunters have to read the country in stair-stepped benches. Water is the defining variable: most drainages run dry outside monsoon, scattered springs like Bluff Spring and the Rio Peñasco corridor draw movement, and Gambel oak acorns drive where animals concentrate in fall.
