New Mexico Unit 34 is a layered mountain-to-desert transect for deer hunters, dropping from the timbered southern Black Range (topping out near 10,011 ft at Hillsboro Peak) down through pinyon-juniper foothills into wide Chihuahuan desert grassland near Deming around 4,200 ft. Water is the deciding variable here: perennial flow is scarce outside upper Black Range drainages like the upper Mimbres and Percha Creek, so most acreage leans on seasonal stock tanks, windmills, and hidden north-slope seeps. Acorn mast from Gambel and gray oak pulls deer into the mid-elevations in good years.
