New Mexico's Unit 24 is defined by the San Mateo Mountains, a steep volcanic range that erupts from high desert basins south of Magdalena, climbing from roughly 6,200 feet in the foothills to over 10,100 feet at San Mateo Peak. For deer hunters, water rules everything here: scattered dirt tanks and north-facing seeps concentrate animals in the dry early season, while frosts later push them onto oak and mountain-mahogany benches around 8,000 to 9,500 feet.
