Unit 23 is a big-sky deer unit where the southern Colorado Plateau gives way to volcanic Mogollon Rim country, a lonesome patchwork of grassland, piñon-juniper, and timbered mesas running from about 6,800 feet in the lower drainages to roughly 9,200 feet on the rim. It is a water-scarce unit where deer orbit man-made dirt tanks and hidden rim seeps, and where Gambel oak acorn mast pulls animals into the mid-elevation brush bands.
