New Mexico Deer Unit 21B

New Mexico's Unit 21B is a study in vertical contrast for deer hunters: it is the slice of Unit 21 outside the Gila National Forest, so instead of deep alpine timber you work high desert basins and volcanic foothills near the Rio Grande that climb into the rugged San Mateo Mountains, a sky island cresting near West Blue Mountain around 10,336 feet. That is nearly 6,000 feet of relief, from creosote and blue grama flats through piñon-juniper into the productive ponderosa parks where oak mast and mountain mahogany hold deer. Water rules the low country, dirt tanks and Alamosa and Cuchillo Negro Creek drainages, with private inholdings pinching public access.
