Unit 14 is a dramatic north-south mountain corridor right against the Albuquerque metro, stacking the Sandia, Manzanita, and Manzano ranges into one steep timbered spine where deer hide remarkably well within a short drive of pavement. The country runs from Chihuahuan grasslands near 5,500 feet to a crest around 10,678 feet, and water is the real constraint: no perennial rivers in the mountain block, just scattered springs and eastern stock tanks, so deer key on the Gambel oak belt in strong acorn years and shift to southern-facing 6,500 to 8,000 foot slopes once snow stacks up.
