Unit 13 is a study in contrasts for deer hunters, a vast high-desert basin (the Plains of San Agustin) ringed by the steep, volcanic San Mateo and Bear Mountains, with the floor near 6,500 feet climbing to roughly 10,336 feet at South Baldy Peak. Water is the limiting factor here, with deer tethered to man-made dirt tanks, windmills, and high-elevation seeps, while Gambel oak acorn mast and piñon-juniper drive the forage.
