GMU 1 hunts more like the Rocky Mountains than the desert Southwest, and for bear that matters: this is cool, timbered volcanic high country climbing from roughly 7,200 feet along the Chama River to above 11,400 feet on the Tusas crest, with Gambel oak mast, serviceberry, and chokecherry feeding bears across the mid-mountain benches. Perennial water in the Rio Brazos and Rio Vallecitos and high beaver-fed vegas keeps animals dispersed.
