Unit 262 is a study in extremes for elk hunters: the Spring Mountains rise nearly 9,000 vertical feet from raw Mojave desert floor to Charleston Peak at roughly 11,916 feet, one of the most dramatic sky-islands in the Great Basin. We map the whole gradient, from the Joshua tree bajadas up through the pinyon-juniper and ponderosa benches between about 6,500 and 9,000 feet where bitterbrush, cliffrose, and aspen pockets pull animals off the highest water.
