Montana's HD 590 is a two-world elk unit where the glacier-scoured Beartooth Plateau towers above 12,000 feet over conifer-choked benches and river-bottom corridors that bottom out near 5,200 feet, so elk season here is dictated by vertical movement. Early-season bulls stage high near lingering snowfields, then the first hard frosts push them onto mid-mountain benches between roughly 7,000 and 9,000 feet, working timber edges, parks, and old burns laced with elk sedge and serviceberry along the Stillwater and Boulder drainages.
